The Tour

The tour focus on the visit of the Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari church and its masterpieces: Titian altarpiece “Assumption”, Giovanni Bellini tryptic “Madonna and Saints”, Donatello “St. John the Baptist” among the others, with an analysis of composition, style, colors and context.

Playing with worksheets, the youngest will be asked to recognize the architectural elements of the Gothic style and its correct vocabulary.

With a final game all participants will be kept entertained and, at the same time, it will use as a revise of the artworks seen and of the experience done.

Frari Church

It took more than 150 years to rebuild the imposing Franciscan church. Consecrated in 1492, it was later enriched by numerous works of art as well as stunning funeral monuments.

Despite the amount of art pieces preserved inside, the architecture still maintains all its greatness and simplicity of the Franciscan Gothic style at the same time.

Titian’s Assumption

Antonio Canova used to say that this is “most beautiful painting in the world” Was he right or not, it’s undeniable one of the greatest masterpieces painted by Titian, whose genius was neared to those of Michelangelo.

Wrapped by a striking red dress, the luminous Madonna rises towards the Sky, accompanied by a crown of puttoes, while the impressed and almost frightened Apostles keep looking at her. A new concept of the religious scene, a revolutionary painting which deserves to be seen.

Giovanni Bellini Madonna with Child and Saints

Emphasized by a gilded frame, the tryptic reveals all the painter’s skills in reproducing the space and in giving life to figures. The tenderness of Mary and the silence in between the couple of Saints throw the viewer in a different dimension, holy but natural at the same time.
