The Tour

The worldwide famous composer Antonio Vivaldi, taught for forty years in this hospital, place of extreme poverty, where the abandoned children were housed.

This is one of the most touching and interesting tour, with an in-depth experience into the life and society of the 18th – 19th c.

The church preserves beautiful paintings by Giambattista Tiepolo, Giambattista Piazzetta and other Venetian artists.

The tour will continue with a walk in Castello district, rich of palazzos, churches and old hospitals.

S. Maria della Pietà church

Rebuilt in the 18th century, the church has always been used both for concert hall and for the liturgy.

The plan, the height and some other elements, projected by the architect Giorgio Massari, have been conceived in order to emphasize the sound of the music played.

Still today, many concerts of classic music are held here.

The ceiling was decorated by Giambattista Tiepolo. Recently restored, it gives an impressive idea of the great skills of the most famous painter of the 18th century.

Antonio Vivaldi museum

Thanks to a new arrangement, the small museum is located in the upper gallery of the church. Reachable by a narrow spiral staircase, it allows to jump back in the past and to tell the story of the thousands of children housed in the institute.

Stories of poverty, starvation, refuge, emancipation… an incredible and authentic slice of life between the 18th and 19th century

S. Maria della Pietà today

Owned by the Provincia di Venezia, the Institute is still following the aim to house the abandoned children. Following the new laws, children live in little communities until they are adopted by a family.

Knowing in detail the services the Pietà provides, can open an interesting topic about past and present.

Tailor Made Tours Available

I warmly suggest to add the visit of the “Sala della Musica” or “Music Hall”, in the old Hospital of Derelicts. Not far from the Pietà, the big complex, since a few months ago nursing house, preserves a small room completely frescoed by Jacopo Guarana.

The church of S. Giovanni Battista in Bragora, where Antonio Vivaldi was baptized, preserves many 15th c. artworks, among them the famous Baptism of Christ by Cima da Conegliano.
